Long before I became a breeder, I was simply a dog mom who wanted to give my dogs the healthiest, happiest lives possible. My trust in NuVet didn’t come from a sales pitch, sponsorship, or discount code. It came from a very personal experience with one of my own dogs.

When one of my girls fractured her hip at only six months old, I was devastated. She was still just a puppy, and suddenly we were faced with a major decision about her future. Our veterinarian presented us with two options: immediate, invasive surgery involving a metal plate and a limp/wobble for the rest of her life or beginning with a more conservative approach that included strict rest, close monitoring, and daily NuJoint® supplementation before re-evaluating her progress.

We chose to try the less invasive approach first, knowing surgery remained an option if she did not improve. I remember watching every step she took and wondering whether we had made the right decision.

Little by little, she progressed.

Her recovery wasn't something that happened overnight. It was a journey that lasted nearly a year and a half, but she continued to become stronger and more mobile. Today, she runs, jumps, plays, and lives without a noticeable limp. Unless I showed you her X-rays and tell you her story, you would probably never know she suffered such a significant injury as a puppy.

That experience completely changed the way I looked at joint health.

As I became more involved in bulldogs and eventually became a breeder, joint health became even more important to me. English Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are incredible breeds, but their unique body structure and genetics can make orthopedic health something we need to take seriously throughout their lives.

Bulldogs can face conditions involving the hips, knees, spine, and other joints. Hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, previous injuries, abnormal joint mechanics, excess body weight, and normal wear over time can all contribute to decreased mobility and, in some dogs, the eventual development of osteoarthritis.

That is one reason I don't believe joint care should begin only after a dog becomes older or starts showing stiffness. For our dogs, I believe in supporting their bodies throughout their lives.

Maintaining an appropriate weight, providing controlled exercise, building and preserving muscle, receiving regular veterinary care, and supporting joint health are all pieces of the bigger picture.

This is particularly important to me with English Bulldogs and French Bulldogs because orthopedic problems can have such a significant effect on their quality of life. Other breeds including German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, Great Danes, Saint Bernards, and many other large, heavy bodied, or genetically predisposed breeds can also experience orthopedic and joint problems.

This is why joint health isn't something I view as an "old dog problem."

It's a lifelong wellness priority.
