For this breeding, we intentionally selected Paco to complement Red’s structure and bring us closer to the ideal outlined by the American Kennel Club Bulldog standard.

Red is a petite standard red female with finer features. She has a smaller, more narrow head (often referred to as a “peanut head”), a lean frame, and lighter muscle mass. While she is structurally sound in many ways, in the show ring she is often faulted for lacking the overall substance, bone, and mass that are expected in the breed. According to the AKC, the Bulldog should present a “thick-set, low-slung, well-muscled” appearance with a “large head in proportion to the body” and “broad shoulders” that contribute to a powerful, square build. These are areas where Red falls short of the standard.

Paco was selected very intentionally to balance those weaknesses. He brings strong bone, a broader and more proportionate head, pronounced muscle mass, and the kind of width through the shoulders and chest that aligns with the AKC’s description of a proper Bulldog. His structure reflects the “wide front,” “heavy bone,” and overall compact, powerful build that the breed standard emphasizes.

The goal of this pairing is not just improvement, but balance. By pairing Red’s cleaner, more refined features with Paco’s substance and mass, we aim to produce a litter that is more consistent with the Bulldog standard specifically puppies with improved head proportion, increased muscle tone, broader shoulders, and a more compact, stocky build overall.

We know some families may notice Paco has a more pronounced nose rope (the wrinkle over the nose) and wonder if that affects breathing. While his rope is a bit more developed, Red’s is lighter, so we expect their puppies to have a nice, balanced and proportionate rope, not overdone.

We’ve also used Paco in previous pairings, and those puppies turned out beautifully with well-balanced features, which gives us a lot of confidence in this match.
